Biking is becoming more and more popular in Peru. Except
for the Amazon basin and the deserted regions along parts of the
coast, this sport can be practiced throughout nearly the whole of Peru.
Three kinds of tours are distinguished concerning their severety
and logisitical aspects: (A) hard, dry ground and less uphill grade
make these tours easiliy accessible, also for beginners; (B) tours
with common uphill grade and moderate risk of injuries, recommended
for experienced bikers. (C) Terrain with high uphill grade and very
slippery or smooth ground with high risk of injuries, often combined
with a high altitude, are only recommendable for experienced, sportive
people in good physical conditions. Generally bikers season
starts in May and ends in October. Along the coast biking is possible
throughout the whole year. Bikers, who wish to ride in high altitudes
should get acclimatised beforehand and make sure that they carry enough good standard
clothing, which will keep them sufficiently warm. It is also important to
take a sufficient amount of spares with you. Enjoy Peru by bike
!
Paracas -
Cordillera Blanca - Lurín-valley
Paracas
Almost all of the Paracas National Park lies in the district of
Ica. Most of the peninsula and the Southern coast are terrains appropriate
for bikers´ requirements. There are short, easy tours, near
the bathing resorts and more difficult ones which lead cross-country
through the desert, passing dunes and uphill grades. Important:
You should make sure that you take with you a sufficient amount
of water storage and a map.
Cordillera Blanca
One of the most beautiful bike tours of whole Peru leads through
the gorges and mountains of Callejón de Huaylas valley, in
the department of Ancash. There you will find a large number of
different tours with varying severeties, all situated in a most
beautiful countryside. Lots of these tours start at high altitudes,
around 3500 metres, and lead all the way downhill. An extraordinery
tour leaves from the lagoon of Llanganuco at 3800 metres and down
to Yungay.Aanother tour follows a mountain pass at 4800 metres from
Punta Olímpica to Carhuaz.
Lurin-valley

While the first hang glider came to Peru as early
as in the nineteenseventies, paragliding has only been practised
here since the nineties. Although not that well known yet, Peru
has turned out the be a real paragliders´ paradise. While
traveling in Peru you should not miss out on trying a tandem flight
yourself and experiencing this amazing feeling of flying in some
of the most beautiful landscapes of the world.
Costa Verde/Lima -
Southern coast - Southern highlands
Costa Verde/Lima
One of the frequently used flight areas is situated in the heart
of the busy downtown of Miraflores (Parapuerto) and in San Isidro
(Parque Gandhi), both in Lima. Starting from the 70 metres high
cliff line you can glide over 8 kilometres down the coast, thereby
reaching an altitude of more than 220 metres. Between 6:30 pm and
9:00 pm, night flights are available. For those who want to reach even
greater heights there is another 'airport' in Lima's distric oft Barranco.
In the outlying area of Lima, there are further flying opportunities
in Pasamayo, 60 km North of Lima, and in Pachacamac, 30 km South
of Lima.
Southern coast
The Southern coast of Peru is also known for its paragliding facilities.
In twenty minutes flight time, altitudes of more than 227 metres
can be reached at Lunahuaná, 160 km South of Lima. In Chincha
(185 km) you can glide down the valley to Canete in two and a half hours
(a 70 km roundtrip). Paracas is another amazing place, known for
its numerous species of animals and plants, you can also enjoy a
flight there. Although the airflow often only allows flights by
experienced paragliders, it is a once-in-a- lifetime experience
to glide over the ocean at only 1 metre above sea level. Also flights
at night time, especially with full moon and those over the famous
Nazca-Lines are fascinating and guarantee mystic encounters.
Southern Highlands
Arequipa is situated at an altitude of 5800 m, and thus
gliding there is a real physical challenge. It is Cusco though that is consdered to be the paragliders
capital. At Mirador de Racchi and Urubama valley, awseome
flights can be realized. For well experienced operators, flights
over the sacred city of Machu Picchu are available. Another commonly
known flight area is Andahuaylas, situated about 180 kilometres
West of Cusco. After detailed instructions about the geographical
disposition of its countryside, spectacular kinds of “Cross
Country flights” are offered.
Even more flight facilities can be found in Hauraz
and Huancayo.
