Dear friend of Peru,

On September 27th, the first Peruvian Tourism Satellite Account was presented. Although its result already have been discussed controversially, the tourism statistics are promising. The number of travelers to Peru has steadily been increasing in the last years.
In order to take better advantage of this trend and at the same time eliminate dangers connected to tourism, more and more projects of sustainable tourism are implemented. Read more about this interesting subject in our Top Topic.

This month's travel notes are of a quite different nature: Anna Oberländer tells you about a visit in the soccer stadium.
Our partners have a lot to tell as well. In our section "From the regions" we will focus on the festivities of the Señor de los Milagros that will turn Lima purple in October.

Tightrope walk between use and abuse - Sustainable tourism in Peru

Indígena"Tourists destroy what they are seeking for by finding it". This dramatic statement by the German writer Hans Magnus Enzensberger unfortunately is true for numerous tourist destinations all around the globe. Peru is one of them. Many famous cultural and natural sights that endured for millenniums have been suffering severe damage since the advent of tourism in the 20th century - irreparable damage in too many cases.

Sustainable tourism, which is defined as the tourism that emphasizes environmental protection and the conservation of indigenous culture and traditions as well as integrates the local inhabitants, is the one and only alternative to mass tourism. It is also the only possibility to make tourism what it is supposed to be: an intercultural exchange of experience and traditions, a source of income for the local people and one of many reasons to stop exploitation of people and environment.

Lake TiticacaThere are several examples of integrative and sustainable tourism all over Peru. For exapmle, guests can chose living with local farmers in Cajamarca under the buzzword of "Turismo Vivencial", stay in an eco-lodge in the Amazon rainforest and first hand experience the importance of this unique biosphere, or buy original handicraft directly at an indigenous community. Tourists that set a high value on supporting the country and are willing to visit rahter than exploit it, will find the best offers to do so in Peru.

Nevertheless, also the sustainable tourism projects face a lot of problems. One example is the Taquile island in Lake Titicaca. For nearly 30 years now, tourists have the opportunity to spend some days with one of the 300 local families that still live together obeying the same community rules like hundreds of years ago. The community sees a great development opportunity in tourism, but also has learned to see this kind of " Turismo Vivcencial" critically. Next to alienation and commercialization of the island´s own culture, the Taquileños also have to face the fact that big tour operators share the profits generated among themselves instead of integrating the Taquileños.

Isla TaquileIn order to work against this the Taquileños started to get organized and are now claiming a voice in this matter in order to get more advantage out of the tourism on their island. A tourism committee was founded as a first measure, representing each of the 6 sectors of the island. By opening a visitor information center on the island and investing into further training and education of the guides the quality of the services are to be improved. Recently a group of Taquileños also visited Lima and presented its first exhibition of photos of the island, demonstrating their own vision of Taquile: a marvelous and picturesque landscape, fascinating history and culture, hospitality and spirit of community as the bases of their way of living.
Taquile can contribute a lot to tourism around the lake Titicaca if all involved persons, last but not least the tourist, act in a sustainable way.

World Tourism Day - Peru presents Tourism Satellite Account

Machu PicchuOn the occasion of the World Tourism Day on September 27th, the Peruvian Ministry for Foreign Economy and Tourism, MINCETUR, for the first time presented a Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) for Peru. This account facilitates measuring tourism and its significance in a country's overall economy by comparing it with other sectors. Not only the long-awaited results were already discussed in advance; authorities are also arguing whether to found a new tourism ministry and if this will be necessary in order to further pursue and promote tourism development in Peru.
Main finding of the TSA is that tourism in Peru accounts for 5,9% of the GDP. According to various discussions in the media, this is a rather disappointing result for the people in charge. What was not considered when computing was the share of the subcontractors and secondary serviced. It is estimated that the portion of tourism in the GDP including these services will amount up to 8,7%.
Another issue is that the calculations were made for the year 2001. Considering growth rates of up to 15% as concerns tourist arrivals, it is to be assumed that newer figures will show a completely different picture.

MexicoU 17 World Champion new U 17 Soccer World Champion!

In the National Stadium, where usually Alianza Lima and Sporting Cristal play their premier league matches, the champion of tomorrow's soccer stars was elected on October 2nd. It was a highly exciting final of Mexico versus Brasil. After a victory in the semi finals against the Netherlands three days before- "los Aztecas" goaled 4 times against the "Oranjes" - Mexico won the crucial match with 3:0. The pool matches of this FIFA U 17 Soccer World Championship had been held in Lima, Chiclayo, Trujillo, Piura and Iquitos since
September 16th.

Andean railway will run with natural gas engines

Ferrocarril Central Andino, operator of the highest railway of the world (4829 m.a.s.l. between La Oroya and Huancayo) announced that it would convert all engines of its locomotives to be run with natural gas. With the help of 13.5 million US dollar loan by the German Society for Investment and Development that has been present in Peru for 21 years now, all locomotives will be adapted. This does not only imply lesser running costs and savings in import of combustibles, but also fewer damages to the environment.

Train connecting Peru, Bolivia and Chile planned

Hiram Bingham Train Machu PicchuAccording to the Chilean newspaper "La Tercera" the Luksic-Consortium is planning to build a tourist railway connecting the Atacama-desert in Chile, the salt desert Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia and Lake Titicaca as well as Machu Picchu in Peru. The negotiations with the Orient Express Chain, so far the only train operator to Machu Picchu, and the US American Casino-enterprise Thunderbird for constructing this "Atacama Express", have already begun. As there have already been found investors in Chile and Peru, the construction of the Chilean part of the trail is supposed to start this year. In order to conclude in Bolivia, this year's presidential elections and a stabilization of the political situation in the country will have to be waited for. But the operators assured that the railway will be finished within the next years.

Contract for construction of the Carretera Interoceánica finally signed

RainforestAttended by the presidents of Brasil and Bolivia, Luis Inácio Lula Da Silva and Eduardo Rodríguez, the Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo finally signed the contract for the further construction and upgrading of the Carretera Interoceánica. This road, that will eventually connect the Brazilian Atlantic ports of Ilo, Matarani and San Juan with the Peruvian Pacific Coast, will have a total length of 2600 km, 1100 km of which are on Peruvian territory.
All three countries come up for the financing of this new arterial road and expect it to contribute to the improvement of the international commerce and the infrastructure for the local inhabitants.

German geologist welcomed as 100,000th tourist in Arequipa

Jens Pyepenbreier was rather astonished when he left the plane in Arequipa and was welcomed with traditional dances and Pisco Sour. The German geologist was the guest number 100,000 that visited Arequipa this year and was therefore welcomed in a special way, honored and congratulated by a greeting committee.
Following the trend that can be observed all over Peru, Arequipa as well will probably be able to raise its visitor numbers by a record-breaking 18% and thus celebrated the arrival of its guest number 100,000.

COAST: Lima turns purple - Celebrating the Señor de los Milagros

Señor de los MilagrosSpending an October in Lima you should definitely not miss participating in one of the numerous processions celebrating the Señor de los Milagros (Lord of the miracles).
The origin of these processions where a picture of a black Christ is being carried through the city, starting and ending at the Iglesia de las Nazarens, dates back to the 17th century.
An Afro-Peruvian slave painted the image of a black Jesus Christ on an adobe wall in Pachacamilla, just outside Lima, in 1650. When five years later a sever earthquake destroyed almost all of the city, this adobe wall miraculously remained untouched. Soon the first pilgrims came to pray and ask for further miracles at this wall with the black Christ. This displeased the authorities of the Catholic church and they ordered to paint over the image. In 1681 a painter was sent but never managed to do so: he collapsed in front of the image without being able to over paint it. Once again the portrait had resisted its destruction. The third miracle happened when another earthquake in 1687 hit the city and destroyed the greater part of Lima and its harbor Callao. Again, the wall with the image remained untouched which caused believers to have a copy of the image painted in oil and carry it through the streets of Lima in order to protect the whole town. It was not until 1771 that this "Lord of the miracles" was officially acknowledged by inaugurating the church Señor de los Milagros in Pachacamilla through the Vice king of Peru, Manuel Amat y Juniet.

But already since this third miracle the image of the "Cristo Moreno" is being carried through all Lima every October. In the course of time these processions, that take place between October 18 and 28, developed into the largest of all South America with hundreds of thousands of followers every year. For the occasion of the celebrations, everybody dresses in purple and the town gets decorated with purple flags and flowers. For any Peru-traveler, this will be an impressive spectacle that will well be worth a visit and should not be missed out!

"La U" vs. "Cienciano" - An afternoon in the soccer stadium

SoccerI"Let's go to the stadium", my limeño friends proposed me. "Alright", I said to myself - at least it was Universitario de Deporte Lima playing against Cienciano Cusco, the current South American champion.

The ticket was 10 Soles (EURO 2,50) at the box office. Pretty cheap, I thought. "We can get that cheaper", my friends said. Indeed, there were dozens of guys with bunches of tickets running around us, trying to sell cheaper tickets. "Everything legal!", they repeated again and again … As soon as the match had started the prices dropped to 5 Soles. We immediately bought tickets and secured our places in the stadium. The fan sectors were completely sold out. Both, the levels of alcoholic as well as the mood were pretty high already!

Soccer1:0, first goal for "la U" - the supporters were cheering and dancing all around me. I appreciatively clapped my hands and felt extremely German - which equaled extremely impassionate … At 2:0 my friends pulled me off my seat and hugged me. At 3:0 I was starting to lose my secret hopes that "Cienciano" might eventually win. But before my friends could pull me off the seat again I precautiously quickly jumped up myself. From time to time I dared shouting "Vamos Cienciano" but apparently my fellow co-spectators felt somehow provoked by that. So, in the end I only softly aspirated my encouragement rather than shouting it. Hardly audible and deeply intimidated I was unfortunately not able anymore to motivate Cusco.

Finally, "la U" won 4:0 - with "only 10 players and against the current champion" I had to hear from my friends all of the time. I hardly managed to protect my face with my hands before they already started tossing me around, hugging and thumping me amicably.
Purely South American temper in the soccer stadium - what else was I to expect!? (Written by Anna Oberländer)
