Dear friend of Peru,
Most people are aware of the fact that Peru is a country enormously
rich in archaeological sites and unique natural areas. Perhaps less
people know that 10 of these sites and areas are part of the UNESCO
World Heritage List. Finally, Peru has now achieved its well deserved
seat in the UNESCO Committee. Read more in this newsletter's top topic.
Did you know that in no other country worldwide there live as many species
of birds as in Peru? This is the reason why birdwatching is the new
trend in Peruvian tourism. There is a lot of potential that all partners
are trying to make the best out of in order for tourists to come and
experience the incredible biodiversity Peru has to offer. In our "From
the region's" section find out more about this promising development.
It might not seem so long, but peruline is celebrating its 4th birthday
already! For us an occasion to once again thank our partners as well
as you, dear readers of this monthly newsletter, who accompanied us
during all these years. With your feedback you do not only contribute
to the steady improvement of the newsletter but also reinforce us in
our daily work. Stay with us and come to visit Peru soon!
Enjoy reading!
Yours

Peru gets seat in the UNESCO committee
In
this year*s July the reunion of the altogether 191 members of the
UNESCO took place in South Africa. The director of Peru*s National
Culture Institute, Luis Lumbreras, could be very delighted as Peru
was elected to inherit one of the seats in the UNESCO committee.
The committee, consisting of 21 members, is elected
in the annual general meeting of the UNESCO by the membering countries.
Its objective is among others to decide about the applications of
being set on the List of World Cultural or World Natural Heritage.
The International Center of Studies for Cultural Heritage Preservation
and Restauration (Roman office), the International Council for Preservation
of Historical Monuments and Buildings (ICO-MOS) as well as the International
Union for Preservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) each
may attend the meeting as advising support.
World Cultural Heritage are monuments, ensembles and
sites that are of extraordinary and universal value.
Even though already ten sites (downtown Cusco, the centers of Lima
and Arequipa, Machu Picchu, Huascarán National Park, Chan Chan,
Manu National Park, National Park Rio Abiseo as well as the Nazca
Lines and the Pampas de Jumana) are assigned in the list, Peru*s cultural
and natural heritage has yet more to offer. Kuélap (archaeological
site near Chachapoyas), the Pyramids of Sun and Moon of the Moche
culture close to Trujillo, Ayacucho as well as the National Reserve
Pacaya Samiria (Northern Peru) and Huayuash (Cordillera Blanca near
Huaraz) are only few examples that Luis Lumbreras has chosen for the
next term.
Chan
Chan, capital of the Chimu realm situated close to contemporary Trujillo
and being the world´s biggest adobe town, was accepted World
Cultural Heritage in 1986 and at the same time was set on the "red
list" which contains the especially endangered sites. As ground
water started to rise, the site impended to break apart. Hard work
avoided damages and even made appreciable progress in preservation.
Nevertheless word gets around that Peru hopes not to lose the site*s
status of being very endangeres as this results in receiving less
financial support for Chan Chan.
For the next decision about new World Heritage Sites in June 2006,
Peru will apply for Pachacamac, an pre-Inca site close to Lima as
well as for Caral, the oldest civilisation in America.

peruline celebrates anniversary!
On
30 October 2001 peruline was officially founded. Peru has not been completely
unknown as a touristic destination but the European demand was not as
grand as today as the market is growing continuously. Gunther Neubert,
owner and founder of the company had observed the lack of information
flow and thus created the first private information service which built
a bridge between tourism companies in Peru and services interested in
South America, journalists, and visitors from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
peruline informs about touristic sights in Peru, provides general information
about the country, its people, culture and history. peruline also supplies
with important touristic background information via the monthly newsletter,
on its internet pages, by its contact office in Passau as well as on tourism
fairs in Germany. The company assists in creating individual or group
journeys, it helps to book hotels, lodges, tour operators and language
schools but also organises press trips and famtrips to Peru.
On the occasion of our fourth anniversary we would like to thank everyone
who helped to make this project possible. Thanks to our Peruvian partners,
hotels and tour operators, lodges and language school whose continuous
efforts contributed in making Peru a better known and desired touristic
destination.
You will find a closer description of our company at the end of this
newsletter as well as on our teampage.

Three year anniversary of the Tumbas Reales de
Sipán Museum
In
1987 in Sipán, close to the town of Chiclayo, the tomb of a Moche
emperor was discovered. Being a tomb that had not been robbed by tomb
raiders this discovery was a world sensation due to its enormous richness.
The grave is also a marvelous record of history that allows an incredible
insight view on this Pre-inca culture. The Lord of Sipan got his name
to honor the location where he was found.
On 7.4 hectars in the town Lambayeque, the Museum Tumbas Reales del Senor
de Sipán wa built in 2002 to honor this discovery. The museum has
the form of a pyramid and is one of the most modern museums in the region
whose philosophy is to revive the Moche culture on three levels with the
golden armory of the Lord of Sipán as expositional highlight.
Onn 8 November 2005 the Museum Tumbas Reales de Sipán celebrates
its third year of existence and already counts with impressing numbers
of visitors. You definitely shouldn´t miss this highlight on your
trip to Peru!
For further information please visit our website at museum Las
Tumbas Reales de Sipán. Our recommended accommodation in Chiclayo
for visiting the Museo Tumbas Reales de Sipán is the
Gran Hotel Chiclayo or the Garza

Oktoberfest in Lima
The world famous Oktoberfest is celebrated in over 100 cities all over
the world and so it is in Lima. In 2002 the idea came up to open the festival
not only to members of the German club but also to the public.
The organisers are the Club Germania, el Treff, el Múnich, Bierhaus
and Rincón Chelero. They intended to create an authentic copy of
the one in Munich with a large tent, imported tables and benches as well
as a band from Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany*s South. On the Vertice
del Museo de la Nación from 14 to 16 October the waitresses dressed
in traditional Bavarian dresses served the guests. The cover was S./50
and included two liters of beer, soft drinks and Bavarian cuisine from
a local food producer. International as well as national companies support
and finance the festival.
This year 10,000 people (7,000 in 2004) visited the Oktoberfest and consumed
an amount of 8,200 liters beer (6,200 l in 2004).
Your will find more information on the Oktoberfest

Amazon river: Lowest stage since 40 years
Due
to a lack of rainfalls in the Andes the Amazon river - usually the river
carrying the most water on Earth - level declined to 106,09 m above sea
level which means an even lower level than in 1995 when the last extreme
decline made it drop to 106,38 m.a.s.l. Its affluxes decreased between
52 cm and almost 3 m which resulted in a decline of the Amazon of over
three meters. As the river and its affluxes still are the main ways of
supply in many regions of the Amazon basin, problems arouse for instance
for some lodges that are only accessible via water route. Furthermore
140 tons of fish died due to the draught and are now polluting the remaining
river. Reasons are not only to be searched in the lack of rainfalls but
also in agriculture. For instance the rice grown in the North extracts
a huge amount of water from the region. In order to prevent further extreme
dryness the cultivation has to be better coordinated.

Natural forces on Machu Picchu
In
the night to 13 October 2005 a stone avalanche caused by the melting water
of the nearby mountain Veronica burried part of the tracks between Cusco
and Aguas Calientes and destroyed a bridge. Thus about 3,000 visitors
were locked in Aguas Calientes but already the next day evacuation started.
Visitors were taken on busses from km 82 to Cusco. The following days
the traffic was regulated with a combination of train and bus.
The clearings progressed faster than previously assumed and consequently
services continued on 16 October on normal schedule.

Extending the Brüning Museums in Lambayeque
The
Brüning Museum, specialized in Cultures of Moche, Lambayeque/Sican
and Chimú and possessing a diverse collection of gold and silver
exposures, has now closed its doors in order to start its rebuilding.
The aim is to rearrange the 2,000 exhibits and to present them in an archaeological
and anthropological context. Further aim is to attract more international
as well as national visitors.
This 486,000 Nuevo Soles project is financially supported by the German-
Peruvian Compensation Fund who pays half of the costs as well as the government
of the region Lambayeque which contributes S./ 100,000. The National Institute
for Culture as well as the community of Lambayeque pay smaller parts.
Constructions are said to be finished by the end of the year.

Expansion of the flight route system within and
to Peru
238,200 European tourists visited Peru this year which implied an increase
of about 18 % compared to the same period of the previous year. Reasons
are the amplification of marketing instruments as well as a better infrastructure
as for instance the more frequent flight connections by Air Madrid, Iberia
and also Air Plus Comet who will offer three flights per week between
Madrid and Lima starting in November. Also the flight operator LAN is
said to be planning direct connections to Madrid. Consequently the National
Tourism Chamber CANATUR visualizes a possibility of other European destinations
to follow.
Also within Peru the flight connections will densify, according to Fernando
Dozo, the head of Aerolineas del Peru (subsidiary of the Aerolineas Argentinas).
Starting in March 2006 the destinations Cusco, Arequipa, Trujillo, Iquitos
and Piura will be included in their route net. Furthermore negotiations
with three potential Peruvian shareholders are in progress who primarily
take over a 51 % share and in the following half year gradually take over
two thirds of the company.
Moreover media states that the national airline Aerocondor is planing
to invest 4.2 Mio USD for stocking up their fleet until the end of the
year.

Casa Andina: excursion to Punta San Fernando
and opening of two new Private Collection Hotels
San
Fernando is one of the least vistited nature reserves on Peru*s coast
and therefore is still an insider tip for nature tourists who will have
perfect circumstances to watch seals, Humboldt-pinguines and - with a
little bit of luck - a herd of Guanacos (lama species). The main attraction
though are the condors who migrate from the Andes to the coast in order
to look for food and later sunbathe on the cliffs and the small island
formations. Our partner Casa Andina Nazca provides the unique opportunity
to realise a daytrip to Punta San Fernando.
Casa Andina Private Collection is happy to announce that eventually two
new exclusive hotels of the Private Collection will be opening in Cusco
as well as in Puno.

Gran Hotel Chiclayo welcomes international
soccer players
The
Under 17 World Championship is over and therefore the Gran Hotel Chiclayo
gives us a small review about the month of September and the habits of
the different nationalities that the Gran Hotel Chiclayo hosted.
After the FIFA had choosen Chiclayo as place to carry out the matches
of Group C with the nations Italy, Ivory Coast, South Corea and USA and
also some games of the other groups, among the the semifinals between
Netherlands and Mexico the Gran Hotel Chiclayo could look forward to welcoming
international guests. This meant a great challenge to staff as to fulfill
all the different preferences and desires of each country. Especially
concerning the cuisine their gusto varied wide. For instance the Coreans
where very fond of the ceviche (raw fish) that is also very popular in
this region. On the contrary the Italian players ate pasta every day.
The Americans were accompanied by their family members and the players
from the Netherlands took along their private tutor in order not to miss
any lessons.
T the well trained staff mastered the obstecals of language, traditions
and food preferences with excellence, cordiality and competence and made
their guests feel at home. This is only one more reason to call the Gran
Hotel Chiclayo one of the best Hotels in the region.

Tourism and nature - Peru promotes birdwatching
The
North of Peru including Tumbes, the regions Piura, Chiclayo, La Libertad,
Cajamarca, Amazonas, San Marin and Loreto with its 1,200 bird species
is known as the most diverse area concerning birds in the world. A recent
study presented by Juan Carlos Diaz and Rob Wiliams, an ecologist specialised
on dry forests, gives proof of that. According to them this is 15 % of
the total bird population in the world.
PromPeru takes this occasion to promote Peru to become a potential bird
watching destination for instance when participating on the recent British
Birdwatching Fair. After all over 10 Million tourists are counted worldwide
to the sector nature tourism and birdwatching. Only mentioning England
was responsible for a turnover of 2 Mio USD in this sector the previous
year.
According to media reports, BirdLife International, an organisation for
the protection of bird species, will open up an office in Peru in order
to better coordinate the preservation of species and also to create a
forum for the distribution of financial support.
By devoloping various birdwatching routes especially in Peru`s North,
an increase of visitor figures for these regions is expected. Some of
the most representative examples for birdwatching destinations are the
National Reserve Pacaya Samiria, the region of Cajamarca and the Manu
National Park, as they host hundreds of bird species which cannot be found
anywhere else in the world.
With its unique biodiversity Peru has the best premises to be a preferential
birdwatching destination, what still lacks is the corresponding infrastructure
as well as local services. Therefore it´s an important aim for the
tourism sector to educate and to sensitize local people for tourism and
the protection of the environement.

TRAVEL
NOTES |
Sierra of Lima: A long upward run for seeing nature,
a beautiful view and the sun
At
half past seven our international travelling group of friends started
its journey towards Chorin in order to get further to San Jerónimo
de Surco. Leaving the dirty city and its poor slums at the edge of it
behind we pass a desert like landscape. Three different combis take us
all the way to Chorin. As there are too many people and too long waiting
times we share a taxi for the last part of the way. The taxi driver takes
his seven passengers - there is also plenty of space in the trunk - up
the windy roads to the starting point of our hike. It is kind of weird
that they cover us for hiking up their mountain but at least they provide
a small brochure explaining the "sites" along the way.
Our
way leads us on smooth serpentine paths along rough hills with rotten
vegetation. Now where is the promised green? Where the nature? The vertile
greenlands and fresh rivers? It will all be green once the rainy season
starts, explains our Peruvian friend. But the disappointment of the beginning
soon vanishes when the continuation of our ascent unravels a fascinating
view with beautiful landscape and the vegetation starts to change. Not
to forget the fresh air that you learn to appreciate with all the pollution
in the city.
"How long does it still take us to get to the waterfalls?" is
the question to all the people, travellers and inhabitants of the mountain
we meet on the way who are on their way down. We gratefully refuse the
offer of one Andean fellow to take one of us up the mountain on his horse
and follow the path leaving the small houses, terrasses, cows, cowbo ys
and donkeys behind. A small waterfall along the path gives us a little
foretaste of what is yet to come. After a three hour hike during which
one piece of clothing after the other moves into our backpacks, our target
is close to grip, we really deserve the fresh cool water of Palacala Waterfalls
and the lazing in the sun. It is the quietness and desertion that makes
the place so beautiful and magical.
In the late afternoon our stomach tells us that is is now time to return
and our echo tells us goodbye as we shout our goodbye into the mountains.
Even though I would have liked to visit the archaeological site Huacapune
on the way down not all the fellowship agreed and as we reached the end
of the decline everyone was happy especially when meeting some campers
whose rise yet lay upon them.
The food the inhabitants sold on the street was the bright closure of
a well spent day. The dogs lungering for our meat finally got the leftovers
and we were off on our long way back home. Really worth a journey!
