comfort. The 45 rooms are equipped to meet highest expectations and also

hotel's own souvenir and antiques store you can enjoy yourself rummaging
for souvenirs and gifts. After a long day of sight seeing in the charming

Climbing
up to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes by foot, around 25 min after leaving
the little town behind, you will reach a little junction: turning left
you continue climbing up to the sacred city, to the right you will see
an unobtrusive wooden sign pointing out the direction to the Machu Picchu-Museum.
This museum has already existed for some years but only recently been
reopened after some renovation. "Museo de sitio Manuel Chávez
Ballón" is the official name, named after Cisco's famous archaeologist.
Together with some of his students of the Universidad San Antonio Abad
of Cusco, he participated in the excavation of the site from 1967 to 1969.
Visiting the small and familiar but nevertheless highly interesting museum
will significantly contribute to completing any Machu Picchu visitor's
impression and knowledge of the Inca's culture and the importance of the
site. Arranged in seven units, guests can admire 200 original and perfectly
conserved findings of the last centuries' excavations. Tools made from
copper, bronze and stone, tweezers and needles as well as pieces of jewelry
and mortars can be observed right next to water mirrors - flat, stony
wells that, filled with water, seemed mirrors and might have served to
observe the starry sky.
Graphic animations of the Incatrail as well as the famous sun dial, explanations
of ceremonies and the highly developed agriculture bring the daily life
in Machu Picchu, probably an administrative center of the Inca and connecting
point between Andes and the fertile rainforest, closer to the spectators.
Another highlight in itself is the architecture and composition of the
exhibition rooms. Partly open spaces that allow little previews into what
the visitor can expect from the following part, contribute to the dynamics
and literally lead the tourists through the seven units. Starting with
an introduction about Machu Picchu, the foggy town as well as a "time
machine" placing and comparing the Inca on a time line with other
cultures until the assumed re-discovery through Hiram Bingham. Digging
in further, tourists are presented the daily life in Machu Picchu. Finally
they get the chance to observe original commodities or read poems and
writs translated from Quechua that handle the topic.
After a visit of the museum - a tour will take you approximately one hour
- it is recommendable to take a walk in the neighboring botanic garden.
Besides typical plants like avocado trees, different types of palms and
even coca plants, you can most of all admire orchids in this 1600 square
meter area. Around Machu Picchu 420 types of these beautiful flowers have
been discovered so far but estimations of the actual number go as high
as 600.
The museum is open from Wednesday to Monday, 9 am to 4 pm. Entrance fee
is 20 Soles for foreign visitors, 10 Soles for Peruvian citizens.
A museum which is really worth a visit!

Already
since I had taken a taster class of paragliding and felt the force and
energy connected to this type of flying, I desperately wanted to really
fly, not only glide 2 meters above ground in order to shortly after land
rather ungentle. When I was then provided the opportunity to get to know
Miraflores from a bird eye's view on a tandem flight, I did not hesitate
a minute. It then turned out to be a beautiful early summer day and sunny
sunday afternoon when I - full with excitement and anticipation and accompanied
by some friends - set off for the field on Lima's coast. The weather was
great, the view perfect and so I could not wait to finally "jump
down the cliffs", as a friend called it.
But first we spent some time watching the pilots and some other tourists
and admiring their maneuvers and feats. Suddenly it was my turn. Before
I could really get a grasp of what was happening, somebody buckled me
up to my pilot Igor and I was given instructions on what to do and how
to react during take-off. I could not refrain from laughing when some
of my slightly worried friends once more wished me luck while I did not
feel nervous at all. Then it finally went off. We prepared ourselves and
when Igor pulled the strings, the paraglide immediately filled with air
and pulled us back a couple of meters before we finally took off and left
the cliff behind us. I
felt
like in a dream when we flew further out over the ocean and constantly
gained altitude. Eventually, Igor turned South and soon we reached the
coast-side shopping mall LarcoMar. Igor asked me whether I wanted to do
a "giro". Not really knowing what to expect from that I just
nodded and hardly managed to take a breath before I suddenly felt like
being on a roller coaster ride and we lost altitude turning small circles
at a higher speed. Wind soughed around me and everything around me rotated
but I felt awesome and could have gone on like that for hours. Unfortunately
we came closer to the surface pretty fast and so we had to stop our skid.
Igor directed us back to the shore and before long we were above the roofs
of the high-rise buildings along the coast. Due to the perfect conditions
I could even spot the mountains to the East of Liam. Regrettably my time
was almost over already so we turned back to the field right next to Parque
del Amor in Miraflores, did a last "giro" and my friends took
some close-up pictures of us while we glided above their heads. Finally
we landed softly right where we had taken off before.
Full of enthusiasm and excitement I told my friends every detail of the
flight and could even the most insecure among them convince to at least
think about flying as well - anyway, I was glad I had experienced one
more highlight so short before my time in Peru would end!
