SPECIAL CHACHAPOYAS PROGRAMMES

The Chachapoyas Study Tour aims to combine education and tourism in Northern Peru. You begin your trip exploring the Moche cultures of the dry coast and will venture over some mountain passes into the spectacular world of the Chachapoya, nestled in the orchid-rich cloud forest.

Fixed departure itinerary 7 days/ 6 nights
starting from Chiclayo

Day 1: Chiclayo
Arrival to Chiclayo, reception and transfer to Gran Hotel Chiclayo. Full day tour visiting: Sipan archaeological site, Túcume pyramids, Royal Tombs of Sipan Museum
Overnight in Chiclayo. (lunch/ dinner)

Day 2: Chiclayo/Leymebamba
Morning departure from Chiclayo by private car, van or minibus. You will cross 4 different Peruvian departments: Lambayeque, South Piura, the North of Cajamarca and end up in the department of Amazonas. You will start at the coast, heading inland and arriving in the late afternoon in the cloud forest of Chachapoyas. A packed lunch and dinner are included. Overnight at Leymebamba Museum (breakfast/ lunch/ dinner). The museum has a research institute with accommodation.

Day 3: Leymebamba
Morning breakfast with the archaeologist
1. Lecture Overview of Chachapoyas Culture
2. Lecture Chachapoyas social organization.
Lunch. Visit the museum lead by an archaeologist including a site lecture about Chachapoyas Mummy technology. Late afternoon explore the Leymebamba town. Overnight at Leymebamba Museum. (breakfast/ lunch/ dinner)

Day 4: Leymebamba
Visit Revash and site lecture about the different customs of the Chachapoyas. Visit a local market and site lecture about the cultural legacy of the Chachapoyas. Overnight at Leymebamba museum. (breakfast/ lunch/ dinner)

Day 5: Leymebamba
La Congona with site lecture about Chachapoyas architecture.
Trek with horse riding. Lecture about nature in the Leymebamba area. Overnight at Leymebamba Museum. (breakfast/ lunch/ dinner)

Day 6: Leymebamba
Visit Kuelap with an archaeologist from the museum. Lecture.
End of Leymebamba museum program Overnight at El Chillo or Chachapoyas city. (breakfast/ lunch/ dinner)

Day 7: Leymebamba
Transfer to Chiclayo. Late flight to Lima for Trujillo or Cusco extension. (breakfast/ lunch)

Optional program:
Extra day in Leymebamba for helping any public school (cleaning, painting, etc.).

On this scenic ride we will start out on the coast, pass two mountain ranges and arrive in the late afternoon in the Cloud forest. A packed lunch and dinner included. Overnight at Leymebamba Museum. (breakfast/ lunch/ dinner) The museum has a research institute with accommodation.

Day 3: Leymebamba
Morning breakfast with the archaeologist
Guided visit to Leymebamba Museum including :
1. Lecture : Overview of Chachapoyas Culture
2. Lecture : Andean mummies and funerary archaeology
Lunch. Explore Leymebamba town including demonstration and talk on the textile tradition in the area since pre-hispanic times.
Overnight at Leymebamba Museum. (breakfast/ lunch/ dinner)

Day 4: Leymebamba
Breakfast. Visit Revash and site lecture about the different funerary customs of the Chachapoyas. Sunday visit the local market. Site lecture about the cultural legacy of the Chachapoyas. Lunch with informal talk about the Chachapoyas culinary customs.The influence of the Incas on Chachapoyas culture and the Quipus. Dinner and overnight at Leymebamba museum. (breakfast/ lunch/ dinner)

Day 5: Leymebamba
Explore La Congona with site lecture about Chachapoyas architecture. Trek and horse riding. Visit natural reserve La Palmas and site lecture: The environmental resources of the area. Special presentation of orchids and birds. Overnight at Leymebamba Museum. (breakfast/ lunch/ dinner)

Day 6: Leymebamba
Morning breakfast. Depart to Kuelap with an archaeologist from the Museum. Site Lecture about the war strategies of the Chachapoyas. Site Lecture about Iconography. Overnight at El Chillo or in the city of Chachapoyas. (breakfast/ lunch/ dinner)

Day 7: Leymebamba
Transfer to Chiclayo. Late flight to Lima for Trujillo or Cusco extension. (breakfast/ lunch)

Optional program:
Extra day in Leymebamba for the following activities :
1. Helping any public school (cleaning, painting, etc.)
2. Helping a local family in the farm or in the agriculture or building special containers for guinea pigs.
