PROGRAMS HELICONIA AMAZON RIVER LODGE
Iquitos is suituated on the Amazon River edge and is the capital
of Peru's largest province, Loreto which covers about 30% of the
country. The town itself is not very attractive in contrast to the
rainforest which surrounds the town in a circle of 1000 km. There
is yet much to research and discover in and about the flood forest
which follows the Amazon River and its wide spreading hydrographic
network.
In the following a 3-day and a 4-day
program are presented to you:

Day 1: Iquitos - Heliconia Lodge - Boat trip - Botanic
Tour
After the arrival in Iquitos you will be brought to the Bellavista
Port, on the shores of the Nanay River, where you board a riverboat.
During this ride you will be able to observe the junction of the
brown turbid Amazon River with the dark waters of the Nanay River
but you can also enjoy the impressive jungle landscape and the rustic
small houses of the riverside towns. You will travel for an hour
and fifteen minutes on the Amazon River to the Yanamono Forest Reserve
(Black Monkey) 80 km downstream from Iquitos where the Heliconia
Amazon River Lodge is located.
Once you arrived at Heliconia you will be welcomed with a cold drink,
immediately after the check in you can rest and later on enjoy a
delicious lunch. In the afternoon you take to a jungle hike into
the Yanamono Reserve, a primary rainforest reserve, for approximately
2 hours accompanied by expert-guides; they will identify various
botanical species such as the Heliconia plant, medicinal plants
and giant trees. During this time you can also see various birds
such as the Turkey Vulture (Cathartes Aura), Black Fronted Nanbird
(Monasa-Atia), and so on. Afterwards you return to the lodge for
a rest and dinner. After observing the Amazonian Sunset, you could
take a night boat ride to the Manco Gulch- if the water level allows
it- or along the Amazon River where you enjoy the magical sounds
of the jungle and the moonlight.
Day 2: Bird watching - Fishing tour - Dolphin watching
Very early, you start a bird watching tour going by boat to
the Cáceres Gulch or a similar gulch (if it's high water).
You will be looking for typical birds of this region and be able
to see the very impressive giant Victoria Regia (Giant Water Lily).
After returning to the lodge for breakfast you visit a Yagua village
where you have the chance to hear about their way of life. On the
return trip to the lodge you stop by at a sugar cane still where
you can try the different drinks made of sugar cane rum. A delicious
lunch will be served at the lodge. In the afternoon, you participate
in a small fishing trip to small tributaries of the Amazon River.
The most experienced fishers can feel the emotion of catching piranhas
and other varieties of Amazon fishes. During the journey, you could
possibly observe shy pink and gray dolphins. Return to the lodge
for dinner. At night the daring can take a hike around the perimeter
of the Lodge to look for tarantulas, fireflies, bats and other jungle
nocturnal creatures.
Day 3: Heliconia Lodge - Iquitos
After breakfast you will be taken back to the city of Iquitos.

Day 3: Visit of a Riverside Town
After breakfast you may enjoy a full day in a riverside town; there
you will be able to see their unique way of living. Returned to
the lodge you can rest and enjoy a tasty lunch. In the afternoon,
you take a trip to the "Tahuampas" (flooded jungle) by
canoes for an hour where you enjoy the marvelous landscape of the
jungle. Back at the lodge a delicious dinner is waiting for you.
Day 4: Iquitos - Lima
After breakfast unfortunately you have to pack in order to return
to Iquitos.
