MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES IN PERU

Peru is a country with an incredibly rich cultural heritage. Even before the foundation of the Inca kingdom or the even older cultures such as the Mochica or the Lambayeque-cultures, there have been human civilizations leaving their mark on this most diverse of countries. Consequently it is not surprising that archaeological museums are numerous in Peru and exhibit some of the worlds finest pieces of anient art in the world.


Lima - Chiclayo - Trujillo - Arequipa - Cusco - Ancash

LIMA

Museo Nacional de Antropología y Arqueología
The extensive collection of old findings such as ceramics and lovely textiles provide a deep look inside the cultures of pre-inca times like the Paracas, Lima, Nazca, Chavín and Chimú. The country's cultures are exhibited in separate rooms and each room provides a timeline and guide through each of the cultures development showing a huge diversity of objects. A small part of the exhibits is dedecated to the Inca and the colonial time. At any time that you feel the need or wan, you are able and welcome to take a rest in one of the marvelous gardens and inner courtyards before continuing the exciting trip through the museum.
Opening hours: Tue to Fri 9 am to 7 pm, Sat 9 am to 4 pm. Guided tours in Spanish and English available.

Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera
The museum is to be found in a precious 17th century building which had been built upon a pre-Columbian pyramid. In chronological order you can get an interesting overview of more than 3000 years of the pre-Columbian history. The museum presents its exhibits in an appealing way, creating an open space with white gallery rooms with high ceilings. This is a pleasant atmosphere in which to view the precious collection of gold and silver and is one of the most visited collections of ceramics with erotic depictions from the Mochica culture. The museums covers a wide spectrum of cultures, materials and subjects and possesses unique artefacts which are often loaned and presented in other museums around the world.
The Larco Museum also has the Café del Museo situated in the gardens. This cafe has an intimate atmosphere and is run by the famous Peruvian star chef Gastón Acurio Jaramillo, owner of the excellent restaurants Astrid & Gastón.

Museo de la Nacion
Peru's National Museum is one of the most remarkable in the country and is without doubt worth visiting. It is a must for all travellers who wish to gain an understanding of Peru. On three levels the visitor will be guided through the history of the cultures from the very beginning to the arrival of the spanish in the Inca period. Most impresive is the replica of the tomb of the Lord of Sipán complete with original burrial objects.

Museo de Oro del Peru y Armas del Mundo
On a par to the gold museum in Bogotá, this museum in Lima is one of the richest in the whole of South America. Gold treasures and gemstones of the Inca and Chimu cultures are exhibited. These artefacts include hair pins, necklaces, drinking bowls and also ceremonial accessories and other cultural objects. The Museo de Oro del Peru y Armas del Mundo presents its artefact in a less didactic style than that of other museums but the accumulated treasures give a very good impression on the richness of the ancient Peruvian cultures. The upper level especially gives the visitor an opportunity to look at a well arranged assortment of clothing and weapons.

Museo Nacional de Historia
Colonial uniforms, paintings and scripts can be viewed at in the National History Museum. The building where the exhibition halls are located, was constructed in 1818 and once served as a residence for the independence leaders Simon Bolívar and José de San Martín.

Museo Enrico Poli
The majority of the museums artefacts originate from Sipan's fifth grave, but other outstanding art objects are also exhibited. It is necessary to make an appointment in advance in order to enter the museum.

CHICLAYO

Museo Tumbas Reales del Señor de Sipán
The museum Tumbas Reales del Señor Sipán is one of Southamerica's most modern and exciting museums. The grave of the Lord of Sipán can be visited here. The 400 plus pieces of jewellery and the golden protecting amor which accompanied the young king in his tomb are very impressive. This museum was opened in 2002 and the architects that designed it did so with emphasis on the ancient pyramids of the Moche-culture, The result is a monumentous building that perfectly combines the Moche heritage with modern style.

Brüning Museum
One of the most important museums in the North of the country is probably the Archaeological Museum Brüning. With four stories exhibiting objects of gold, silver and copper, discovered by the German anthropologist Heinrich Brünning between 1875 and 1925 in this region. The findings originate from the civilizations from this area dating back 4000 years. One of the most significant collections of jewellery in the country is displayed in the Golden Hall.

Sicán Museum
Museum Sicán is situated in the nearby town Ferreñafe. Its policy is to share the continuous research progress about the Sicán-culture with the visitor. A reconstruction of the grave that has been excavated in Batán Grande is the highlight of the museum.

TRUJILLO

Museo de Arqueología y Anthropología de la Universidad Trujillo
The University of Trujillo is responsible body for this museum. It displays ceramics, textiles, wooden and iron artefacts andt also a collection of bones. All exhibits were found in Trujillo or in the city's vacinity.

AREQUIPA

Museo Santurarios Andinos
The Museo Santurarios Andinos of the Universidad Católica Santa María in Arequipa exhibits the mummy Juanita (better known to Europeans as 'The Ice Maiden'. The well-preserved corpse of a 13-year-old girl was discovered in 1995 and was problably a religious sacrifice. Tthe museum shows a 20 minute film about the discovery and research of the mummy Juanita.

Museo de Arte Religioso
The Museum of religious and spiritual art in Cusco is situated in the former arch bishop's palace. A collection of artcrafts of the school in Cusco is exhibited in the Museo de Arte Religioso, also sculptures and furniture are to be found here. The objects originate from a private foundation of the diocese of Cusco.
Opening hours: Mon to Sat 9 am to 12.30 pm and 3 to 6 pm

Museo de Arte Precolombino
This museum is a subsidiary of the Museo Larco Herrara in Lima and is located in the Casa Cabrera in Cusco. The museum is said to be one of the best exhibition halls in Peru, two levels providing plenty of space for art historic and archaeologic finds. The 450 exhibits cover a period between 1250 BC and 1532 AD. The 11 rooms show ceramics, wooden figures, golden and silver jewellery and coral necklaces. The atefacts are well presented and text boxes provide interesting facts and information.

Museo Inca
La Universidad Nacional San Antonio Abad del Cusco is the responsible body of the museum which exhibits objects of the Inca culture. Along with ceramics, jewellery and objects of daily use you will find paintings of Cusco's art school. The 17th century Palace of Almirante is extraordinary stunning. Opening hours: daily 8 am to 2 pm

Museo Regional Max Uhle
This museum is placed in the department of Anacash close to the ruin complex of Sechín. A miniature model of this pyramid can be seen in the museum. Moreover it displays some excavated objects.
