and offers very few attractions, but Abancay is the perfect starting
point for numerous trekking tours like the one to Choquequirao.
Lovers of nature and hiking will enjoy their time in this lovely
region.
Festivals
Sondor Raimy, the festivity for the condors is one of the major

The name of Abancay, capital of the department Apurímac,
is Quechua and means "Valley of the lilies". The town,
founded in 1574, still has only little tourist developement. It
is mainly known for its culinary speciality ´Cuy relleno´,
stuffed guinea pig.
Every year Abancay celebrates its carneval. The whole town gets
caught up in this colorful event.
The areas around Abancay offer impressive mountain views of snow-capped
peaks as well as many archaeological sites.
Abancay is also the ideal starting point for numerous adventure
sports that can easily be exercised throughout the whole department
of Apurímac: trekking tours in the rough mountain ranges
or white water rafting on the Apurima-river, every sport-tourist
will enjoy practicing his favourite activity in the incomparable
landscape with its unspoilt nature.
