Choquequirao - Saywite - Apurimac Canyon

CHOQUEQUIRAO

These Inca-ruins with the beautiful name "Cradle of gold" (Quechua: Chuqui Kíraw) can be reached through one of Peru's most amazing treks. The site itself has not yet been fully restored, but its terraces are reminisant of Machu Picchu. Starting in Cachora, a little town about 15 km from Abancay, a wide and secure Inca trail leads to the fortress that was discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1909. Choquequirao lies above 3,000 m so visitors should take some time for ascent and descent.

SAYWITE

Only little is known so far about the ruins of the Piedra de Saywite. The pictures of people in typical Inca clothes on the rock could possibly represent the 4 parts of the Inca kingdom.
Rows of monolithes within the complex might also have been used in the course of some sun cult. Another theory assumes that they were used in order to observe the movement of the stars.

APURIMAC CANYON

The canyon of the Apurimac river is one of the deepest in the world and lies between the regions of Apurímac and Cusco. Up to 5000 m deep the river has also given its name to the department. The Apurmiac Canyon is without doubt one of the most impressive on the American continent. Especially canoists enjoy eventful tours in these white waters.
