The legendary town Kuélap lies in the mountains in the Southeast
of Chachapoyas. Behind the humongous, 20 m high walls are situated 400 mainly
round houses. The watchtower offers a fabulous view
over the Utcbamba Valley.
Studies reveal that Kuélap had been populated between 500
and 1000 AD. The fortress is known to be the biggest in
Latin America. For its construction the "Men of the clouds",
as they were called by the Inca, used 700,000 km³ of stone and earth.
A nice alternative to going there by bus would be a five to six
hours hike starting at the small village Tingo (approximately 20
km away from Chachapoyas).

Levanto is a town built by the Spanish in 1538 on top of the original Chachapoyan foundations that were already situated in the picturesque landscape. Most amazing is the 23 km long and 80 to 100
m high pre-hispanic channel Aspachaca, which supplied Levanto with
water.
Also very fascinating are the round buildings of Yalapé which
can be easily climbed up to during a 30 minute walk. The city complex was built
by the Chachapoya between 1100 and 1300 AD.

The village's origin dates back to pre-Inca times and has kept its traditional
architecture. The roofs are topped with straw and the church is
probably the oldest in the region. Most of the inhabitants of the village still wear traditional
clothes.

In 2000, a lovely museum was opened in Leymebamba. It exhibits
spectacular finds that were discovered three years prior at the
Laguna de los Condores just South of the village. The 5000 pieces
(among them bamboo helmets, ceramics, fabrics and clothing needles)
helped scientists to learn a lot more about the fascinating culture
of the Chachapoya. The 200 mummies, that were found in almost untouched
graves, will make visitors shiver.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Exotic, 2-metre high statues are enthroned up on a rock near Karajía.
These statues with their oval, flatly chiselled faces and angular
noses were used as sarcophagi by the Chachapoya (mummies in crouching position
were discovered inside of them). Visitors will feel reminded of the
famous stone statues of Easter Island.

Near the town of Santo Tomas de Quillay, on the top of a mountain,
you can find impressive burial buildings. This cemetery was built
in multistory chambers, which are like miniatures of brightly red
houses and palaces. The rock faces in Revash are decorated with
geometrical camelid figures.

The funeral towers of Macro are built into rock faces on the shore
of the river Utcumbamba. In ancient times this extraordinary location, high up in
the mountains, facilitated the communication with the fortress via signal
fires, which were visible over great distances.
