A highlight during a stay in Chiclayo will be to visit the complex
of Túcume with its 26 clay pyramids that are over 1000 years
old, surrounded by prosperous fields and occupy a territory of 220
hectares. They have been used as houses, storages as well as for
spiritual celebrations. The pyramid Huaca Larga with 700 m length,
280 m width and 30 m height is the biggest clay building in whole
South America. At sunset this is said to be a fascinating and
mystic experience. Another unforgettable sight is the museum Tumbas
Reales.

Sipán is a Quechuan word and means "House Of The Moon".
In 1987 an extraordinary finding was made next to the village carrying
this name inside two adobe pyramids: The tomb of the Lord of
Sipán. The numerous burial objects and the complete constituency
of the grave reveal important and unique knowledge about the Mochica-culture.
Most of the found objects are now safe in a museum in Lima and in
the Brüning museum in Lambayeque. Replicas on display here though create
a good impression of the anthropological immportance of Sipán.

EXCAVATION SITE (BATAN GRANDE) |
10 Kilometres North of Túcumeis located the Batán
Grande pyramid complex. From 900 to 1100 AD it used to be the administrative
centre of the Sicán culture. The gravesite Huaca
Loro was discovered here in 1978 but it was not opened to the
public until 1992. Unfortunately many of the most impressive burial
objects are no longer to be found here as they were either sold or stolen.

About 14 km away from Chiclayo you will find Pimentel and Santa
Rosa, two long sandy beaches. It is here that fishermen construct their
traditional weaved cane boats called 'Caballitos de Totora' which were
used for fishing long before the colonialisation of the continent. Many Peruvians
use the long waves for surfing.
