In 1532 Francisco Pizarro founded this university
city. This was three years before Lima had been founded which makes
Piura the oldest town in Peru. The oil production creates an industrialised
character but there is also some agriculture such as cotton
and lemon cultivation.
Despite a strong earthquake in 1922 there are still
some old colonial buildings standing in the centre of the city. The cathedral
on the Plaza de Armas dating back to 1588 is especially attractive.
In the Museo de Arqueología Municipal you can admire golden
jewellery as well as ceramic artefacts originating from the Vicú
culture. The Vicús are one of the oldest developed cultures
on the Peruvian coast. Also the objects of the Huacapampa
culture which have been found in the Cerro Saquir are very interesting.
